Fall 2022 Semester Program

  • Spend the fall 2022 semester in London, one of the oldest, most exciting cities in Europe. 

    During this Study Abroad program, you will live in London, come to know the city and its people, and learn a way of understanding cities that you can take with you as you travel during fall semester and into the future.

    On foot and through texts, including plays, you will gain a sense of the history of the city and the British sensibility.  You’ll have the chance to delve into the British Theatre scene, attending plays and trying your hand at being a drama critic.  Your other classes will include a history course that will help you understand contemporary Europe and Brexit, and an Art History course where your classroom will be some of the finest museums in the world.  

    This Study Abroad program provides you an integrated set of classes that will enable you to come to your own understanding of the UK, while encouraging you to make friends and explore new places.  You will drink tea, travel on the Thames, watch plays, and explore.  Excursions will be offered to Oxford, Stratford-Upon-Avon, and Scotland, and you are encouraged to travel. Above all, the goal of the semester is that you truly come to know the city and the country not as a tourist, but as someone who has lived there.

  • Barbara Bell, Associate Professor of English, has been teaching college English since 1988.  After earning her B.A. and M.A. degrees at Texas A&M University, she held a teaching position at Francis Marion University before joining the SBCC faculty in 1997.  

    Professor Bell spent a semester in London as an undergraduate, and she fell in love with the city at first sight. Her transformational experience studying abroad as a student inspired her to lead these programs as an instructor.  She has directed three England programs for SBCC--two in London, and one in Cambridge. She also travels through the UK on a regular basis--on foot, by train, by car, and on a road bike.  She is a serious Beatles fan and had the good fortune to meet Paul McCartney in London during her undergraduate program (ask her about it).  She has walked the Abbey Road crosswalk on numerous occasions, both with and without shoes (ask her about it).  

    She looks forward to introducing students to London through the texts they'll read, the places they'll visit, and the adventures they'll share with each other.

  • The program will have many cultural and academic events, which are mandatory. Below is a list of tentative program highlights included in the program (subject to change):

    - Welcome and Farewell meal
    - Three-day, two-night excursion to Oxford and Stratford Upon Avon
    - Guided walking tour of Oxford, including a tour of one of the Oxford University colleges and services of a Blue Badge professional guide throughout the excursion
    - Entrance to Blenheim Palace
    - A performance at the Royal Shakespeare theatre
    - Two London Theatre performances
    - Entrance to Shakespeare's Birthplace and Mary Arden's Farm
    - A guided half-day sightseeing tour of London by private bus and a walking tour
    - Workshops with local staff about life in London

    OPTIONAL (and not included in the program cost):
    - Four-day, three-night excursion to Scotland for a supplemental fee of $625. Included in the price is a return train ticket from London to Edinburgh, three nights hostel accommodation with breakfast included (one night in Edinburgh, one night in Loch Ness, one night on the Isle of Skye), a three-day guided bus tour to the highlands and islands of Scotland, two evening meals and the service of an AIFS staff member throughout the excursion.

  • You do not have to be currently enrolled at SBCC to apply for the program. However, you must meet the following requirements:

    • Must be in good academic standing to participate in the program
    • Must be at least 18 years old on the day of departure
    • Must have successfully completed at least 12 college level units
    • Must have completed ENG110 prior to registering for program courses. (Please follow these steps for Transcript Evaluation if you are not a SBCC student)
    • Must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5

    After acceptance to the program and official program go announcement:
    - Must enroll at SBCC for the fall 2022 semester in order to participate in the program
    - Must provide proof of international health insurance
    - We highly recommend that you purchase Trip Cancellation or Interruption insurance "Cancel for any reason" (CFAR). You can follow the link to find suggestions for provider, however, please note that SBCC is not affiliated with or endorses any of the providers listed on our Healh & Safety page
    - Please note that this program has a Covid-19 vaccination requirement. If you received your last Covid dose or booster prior to October 2021, you will need to get a booster prior to leaving to Japan.

    There is no major or language requirement for this program.

    Acceptance and participation in the program is not guaranteed until you have completed the interview with the program director and all required documents are received by the Study Abroad office.

  • The courses that are offered as part of the program are usually transferable to the University of California and California State University. Check with your academic advisor for possible exceptions.  You must enroll in all courses offered and be enrolled in the 12 units throughout the whole program.

    Classes offered on this program are:

    English 222 Survey of British Literature - 3 Units: Survey of British literature during 1798-present, including fiction, poetry, drama and essays. Prerequisites: ENG 110 or 110H. Course Advisories: ENG 111 or 111H. SBCC General Education: SBCCGE Area C.  Transfer Information: CSUGE Area C2, IGETC Area 3B, CSU Transferable, UC Transferable. UC Transfer Limit: ENG 222 and 222H combined: maximum credit, one course. C-ID: ENGL 165.

    English 262 Shakespeare - 3 Units: Study of the most representative examples of Shakespeare's four dramatic genres and sonnets. Prerequisites: ENG 110 or ENG 110H.     Art History 104 - History Of Art, Renaissance To Modern - 3 Units: Survey of art from 1300 to the end of the 20th century (the Renaissance to Post-Modernism), and an examination of its cultural and conceptual context. SBCC General Education: SBCCGE Area C. Transfer Information: CSUGE Area C1, IGETC Area 3A, CSU Transferable, UC Transferable. UC Transfer Limit: 104 and 104H combined: Maximum credit, one course.     History 120 Modern Europe - 3 Units: European history from the late 19th century to the present, emphasizing the two world wars and the rise of the totalitarian dictatorships since World War I.     2nd payment in the amount of $3,688  is due on July 13, 2022

    3rd payment in the amount of $3,687 is due on July 22, 2022

    AIFS will automatically withdraw students who are not paid in full by the final payment deadline.

    AIFS group flight cost (estimated total $646 ) to be paid directly to AIFS by June 7, 2022. A minimum of 10 students are needed by June 7, 2022 for the group flight to materialize. AIFS can not arrange airline tickets after June 22, 2022.

  • Round-Trip airfare is not included in the program price.


    An optional group flight (Airfare Package) will be offered on a space-available basis through AIFS. The group flight includes round-trip flights from and back to Los Angeles (LAX) in economy/standard class and has a minimum requirement of 10 students by June 7, 2022, in order to materialize. It also includes round-trip transfers in London between the airport and the student housing. AIFS staff will meet students at the airport and assist on arrival to escort students to their housing. If 10 students are not registered for the group flight by June 7, 2022 the group flight will be cancelled.

    *** Once airline tickets have been issued to students, they can only be changed directly with the issuing agent - agent and airline-imposed penalties apply
    **** AIFS cannot arrange airline tickets for students requesting the Airfare Package after June 22, 2022
    **** We strongly encourage you to purchase an optional Travel Cancellation and Interruption insurance. AIFS offers an additional policy. Here are the details. Other insurances include InsureMyTrip

    Other transportation:
    London transport travel pass, valid for unlimited use on the buses and underground trains in travel zones 1 and 2 (for students in shared apartments) and zones 1, 2, 3 (for students in homestays) for the duration of the program.

    Train Ticket from London to Edinburgh for the optional Scotland weekend.

    4-day/3-night guided excursion to Scotland for a supplemental fee. Included in the price is a return train ticket from London to Edinburgh, 3 nights hostel accommodation with breakfast (1 night in Edinburgh, 1 night in Loch Ness, 1 night on the Isle of skye), a 3-day guided bus tour to the Highlands and islands of Scotland, 2 evening meals, and the services of an AIFS staff member throughout. Additional cost $625  

  • Accommodation in a twin room in a homestay within a residential neighborhood of London in the inner 3 zones of the London transport system. Breakfast will be provided in the homestay five days per week and students will have kitchen privileges.

    Please note: in an effort to protect the health and safety of host families, staff, and participants, proof of Covid-19 vaccination is required by AIFS. More details can be found on the AIFS FAQ page HERE. Any legitimate exemption request to the vaccine requirement for fall 2022 programs will be reviewed by AIFS on a case-by-case basis at the request of the participant. 

    Apartment Upgrade: For a supplemental fee of $1,740, accommodation is offered in shared apartments  in central London. Students can choose to live in a supervised AIFS residence (shared apartment with self-catering facilities) instead of a shared homestay. Total program cost with apartment update is  $ 9,565. Let AIFS know upon acceptance if you want this supplemental apartment upgrade. 

  •  Deadline to apply: June 14, 2022  

    If you are planning on purchasing the optional group flight, you must let AIFS know before June 7, 2022 , via their online portal (purchase Transportation Package).  A  minimum of 10 students is needed for the group flight to materialize.

    The Student Conduct Release Form needs to be completed by the appropriate school official at your school. If you are currently, or have most recently been attending SBCC, this school official is the Associate Dean, Dr. Christopher Johnson, located at Campus Center CC-222. You can submit the form to his assistant Candee Gyll at  Original signatures must be obtained. If you are or have most recently been a High School student, your High School official responsible for student and academic conduct must complete this form. At least one recommendation needs to be completed by a faculty. The second form can be completed by another faculty, or a supervisor. All forms should be uploaded via the online application when you submit it.

    Please make sure you read all the instructions on how to apply on the application form before starting your application as you will not be able to save and continue the form. You will need to complete your required documents prior to starting the application. 
    After review of your application, the program director, Professor Barbara Bell will be scheduled. As long as SBCC staff is working remotely or if you live outside of the Santa Barbara area,  interviews will be held by phone, Zoom or Skype.
    Once you have officially been ccepted to the program, the application will be forwarded to AIFS and your non-refundable application fee will be charged. Please review the cancelation policy below and on the AIFS website.
    Subsequent payments must be made directly to AIFS. Failure to make any payment when due will automatically cancel you from the program one week after the payment due date. All payments are effective the day they are received by AIFS.

  • Any individual cancellation must be made in writing to the AIFS and is effective the date of the receipt by AIFS. In addition, student must e-mail the SBCC Study Abroad office at Cancellation and Refund Policies are those of the service provider and may be subject to change. Please check with AIFS for policies, deadlines, payments, and refunds.

    If student withdraws on or before June 22, 2022  AIFS will refund all fees paid less a $150 processing fee. 

    If student withdraws after June 22, 2022, but on or before July 22, 2022 AIFS will refund all fees paid less the $450 deposit and any non-refundable deposits paid by the student or by AIFS on the student's behalf.

    If the student withdraws after July 22, 2022, no refund* will be provided and the total program fee is due.
    *Students who withdraw for reasons covered under the Program Fee Refund Benefit will receive a partial refund. See more about the optional trip insurance below.

    Should Santa Barbara City College cancel the program after  June 22, 2022 but before July 22, 2022, AIFS will refund all fees paid except the $450 deposit and any non-refundable deposits paid by the student or by AIFS on the student’s behalf. Should Santa Barbara City College cancel the program after the final payment deadline students will receive no refund except recoverable costs. **

    Should AIFS cancel the program prior to departure for reasons within its control, students will receive a full refund.

    Should AIFS cancel a program after July 30, 2022 (including once the program has started) for reasons beyond its control including but not limited to Acts of God, government actions (including those restricting travel), pandemics, fire, flood, explosion, earthquake, or other natural forces, war, civil unrest, accident, any strike or labor disturbance, or any other event similar to those enumerated above (a “Force Majeure Event”) students will receive no refund except for recoverable costs.

    To secure appropriate facilities payment has to be made in advance for many program components such as housing, transportation, excursions etc. In the event of cancellation after the program has begun AIFS will endeavor to obtain refunds from suppliers and pass any recovered costs on to the student.

    Please note that any student who is academically withdrawn by SBCC after their application has been processed by AIFS is subject to the standard refund policy.

    **Optional Trip Interruption or Cancellation Insurance
    Applicants will have the option of purchasing additional trip cancellation or interruption insurance from AIFS which allows them to protect their study abroad program. This policy includes options to cancel for any reason (CFAR) and interrupt for any reason (IFAR). Details of the Worldwide Trip Protector Plans with travel insurance underwritten by the United States Fire Insurance Company, rated A (Excellent) by A.M. Best 2019, are available on the Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) website -   Students may purchase their plan directly through the CISI website. 

    NOTE: Always check with AIFS about any changes to the Cancellation and Refund Policy.


    Given the ever-evolving nature of COVID-19 circumstances and our aim to ensure that all program participants have a unique, unforgettable, immersive, and safe time abroad, AIFS, our service provider, and SBCC require that all program participants (students, faculty leaders, spouses alike) be fully vaccinated prior to their departure to England.

    In addition, if you are planning on traveling outside of England, please keep in mind that the majority of European citizens are now fully vaccinated, and local regulations provide the freedom to explore, learn, travel, and partake in the unique cultural experiences we have offered for many years. In most cases, however, these freedoms apply solely to fully-vaccinated individuals (or those who have recently recovered from COVID-19). Non-vaccinated individuals must present a negative test (sometimes a PCR test) for all activities in some countries. In most cases, these official tests are only valid for 24 hours, time consuming, and are at the individual’s expense.

    Some countries have stricter regulations, declaring that only vaccinated or recovered people can participate in indoor activities (for example, restaurant and museums visits), and a negative test will not be sufficient for entry.

    All program participants deserve a transformational academic experience abroad and should be permitted equal access to all elements of their international program.

    Non-vaccinated participants would be required to take a test every 24 hours, have a higher risk of being quarantined, and may not be allowed to join activities that are part of the program and comprehensive study abroad experience they paid for.

    Optional Insurance Upgrade:
    Optional Extra Protection Insurance Coverage, including increased medical insurance is available through AIFS as outlined in the AIFS insurance brochure.

    Program Orientation: A mandatory pre-departure meeting will be conducted at SBCC or online in August 2022, introducing the academic course work, addressing general aspects of study abroad and cross-cultural learning and providing practical information regarding preparation and travel. Please check with the Study Abroad Office for the exact date before you make your travel arrangements.

    An on-site orientation in London held by AIFS staff on the day after arrival covers practical matters as well as aspects of cross-cultural living and learning, giving program participants the tools they need to make the most of their time in London.
